Building Wire Basics: What Should You Know Before Buying
Building wire serves as the electrical conductor that transports electricity from the service panel to outlets, lighting fixtures, and various other devices within a structure. Typically composed of copper or aluminum, these wires are insulated with materials designed to protect them from heat, moisture, and other environmental factors.
Widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial construction, building wire must adhere to specific national and local regulations, including the National Electrical Code (NEC). Selecting the proper wire type is essential, not just for functionality but also to comply with legal requirements.
Building wire comes in different types, each suited for particular applications depending on the installation environment and electrical load. Below are some of the most common types that contractors typically use:
1.THHN/THWN-2: This thermoplastic heat- and water-resistant nylon-coated wire is one of the most frequently used types in both residential and commercial construction. It is approved for both dry and wet locations, with a temperature rating of up to 90°C.
2.NM-B (Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable): Often known as Romex, this is the standard wiring for interior residential installations. It consists of two or more conductors and a ground wire encased in a flexible plastic sheath.
3.UF-B (Underground Feeder): This wire is specifically designed for underground applications. Its durable, water-resistant outer jacket offers protection from moisture, corrosion, and physical wear.
4.XHHW-2: Featuring cross-linked polyethylene insulation, this wire is suitable for both wet and dry locations. It provides superior heat resistance and insulation performance compared to THHN.
For a reliable and high-quality solution that meets the requirements of various environments, Linsheng Electric offers a range of building wire products designed to handle diverse electrical loads and environmental conditions.
