Electric dryers are often sold without a power cord because homes may have either three-slot or four-slot outlets. Since modern electrical standards require a four-prong cord with separate neutral and ground wires, many users need to install the cord themselves to match a four-slot dryer outlet. The process is straightforward if the correct tools and materials are prepared.

Tools and Materials

1.Screwdriver or nut driver

2.UL-listed 4-prong dryer cord (typically 30-amp)

3.Strain-relief clamp 

Step 1: Open the Terminal Cover

Locate the small metal cover on the back of the dryer. Remove the screws and take off the cover plate to expose the wiring terminal block.

Step 2: Insert the Cord

Feed the new dryer cord through the cord entry hole near the terminal block. Attach the green ground wire to the grounding screw on the dryer’s metal frame and tighten it securely.

Step 3: Connect the Wires

Connect the remaining wires to the terminal block:

White wire → center terminal (neutral)

Black wire → one outer terminal (hot)

Red wire → the other outer terminal (hot)

Tighten all terminal screws firmly to ensure stable connections.

Step 4: Secure the Cord

Install a strain-relief fitting where the cord enters the dryer panel. Tighten the clamp so the cord is held firmly without damaging the insulation.

Step 5: Reattach the Cover

Place the cover plate back over the terminal block and fasten it with the original screws. Ensure the dryer controls are off, then plug the cord into the four-slot outlet and test the dryer.
