What is Fish Tape and How to Use It Effectively?
Fish tape is a handy tool used by electricians to guide electrical cables through confined spaces such as behind walls or within conduits. It is typically made from flexible materials like steel or polyester and is stored in a circular plastic reel, which allows for easy extension and retraction. Available in various lengths from 25 to 200 feet, fish tape makes cable installation in difficult-to-reach areas simple and prevents damage to surrounding structures.
Whether you’re using a manual or electric fish tape, the basic procedure for pulling wires through conduits or walls is generally the same. Follow these steps to use fish tape effectively:
Prepare the Fish Tape: Begin by unwinding a small section of the fish tape from its storage reel. Extend only enough tape to reach through the conduit or wall, ensuring you have just the right amount for the task.
Guide the Fish Tape Through: Push the fish tape through the conduit or wall hole, gently maneuvering it if you encounter any resistance or bends. If needed, use a wire-pulling lubricant to minimize friction, making it easier to slide the tape through tight spots.
Attach the Electrical Wire: Once the fish tape reaches the other side, strip a small section of the insulation off the electrical wire to expose the inner conductors. Twist the wires together securely and create a small loop at the end. Attach this loop to the fish tape, then wrap it firmly with electrical tape to ensure it pulls smoothly without detaching.
Retract the Fish Tape: After securing the wire, slowly pull the fish tape back through the conduit, carefully guiding it to avoid any snags or damage.
Remove the Wire: Once the wire has passed through the conduit, remove the electrical tape and detach the wire from the fish tape. Leave enough wire at each end to make your electrical connections.
Store the Fish Tape: Finally, wind the fish tape back into its reel, ensuring it’s clean and dry before storage. If the tape has been exposed to moisture, drying it off helps prevent rust, ensuring the longevity of your fish tape.
